Constantine Francois de Chasseboeuf, Comte de Volney, 1757-1820, philosophe, députe a l´Assemble Nationale de 1789, participa a l effervescence intellectuelle qui prepara la revolution. En Aout 1791 il imprima les "Ruines" , le 5 decembre 1791, il renvoya á la czarine Catherine II la médaille dont elle lui avait fait présent; c´était lui reprocher son alliance avec les émigrés.
Volnay s´opposa a la création de l´Empire. En 1814 , il vota la déchéance de Napoleon.
